New Year, New You.
I’ll be honest… I’m tired of hearing that. What’s wrong with the current you? Sure, we all may need a bit of fine-tuning here and there, but a whole new you? That’s a bit extreme. You’re not that bad.
Here’s what I think makes more sense:
New Year, Best You.
It’s an exercise in understanding who you are so that you can be the best version of you while remaining true to yourself.
So how do you plan to be the best you possible in 2015? Think. Reflect. Plan. Write it down.
Review last year
Take some time to look at where you are in your life. Reflect on the past year and all that it contained. Are you happy with what you’ve accomplished? What has made you happy? Sad? Angry? What are your best achievements? Worst failures? What have you learned? Think about the things that drove you, motivated you, lifted you up, and knocked you back. What can you hold on to in the New Year and what can you let go of?
Write down what you want from life
I went on my own ‘Reset’ trip in April of 2014. It forced me to look at my life and my future. After about a month of careful consideration of who I was, what made me happy, and where I wanted to go in life I bought myself a beautiful notebook and started writing. I reviewed this list over the December holiday season and I was ecstatic. I’ve accomplished everything on it! There is power in understanding what you want in life and putting it on paper. Write it down. Do not forget your commitments to yourself.
Write down specific goals
What do you want to achieve in the New Year? What do you want to learn? How do you want to live? Write it all down so you know what to work towards and can hold yourself accountable. If you don’t have a way to remind yourself or a set plan, you may find yourself six months from now realizing you haven’t accomplished anything.
Here’s a few examples of my goals for 2015:
Create a timeline
Set timelines for specific goals and tasks. Some goals are difficult to assign a timeline to – like being open to adventures. That’s just a way of being. But if you keep it somewhere in the back of your mind, the next opportunity that comes up you may find yourself stopping and thinking “…Yeah. Why the hell not?”
I’ve made a list of 15 things I want to accomplish in January 2015 which is a happy combination of goals and a to-do list. Now that it’s in writing in my trusted notebook, I will have a way to measure my success. Completing to-do lists is unbelievably satisfying. So write it down, and keep it handy!
Do not give up! Don’t be afraid to go after the things you want with passion. Life is finite. Don’t waste time waiting for “the right time”, or more money, or less stress. Remain focused on your goals and tasks so you can actively work towards the best version of you every single day.
