Q&A with Bethany Webb, Reset Retreat Texas yoga coach

We are happy to introduce Bethany Webb, our yoga coach! We heard about Bethany through a very trusted friend who couldn’t say enough wonderful things. We knew we had to meet this woman, and couldn’t think of someone else who aligns so closely with our message.

Q&A with Bethany Webb

RR: Tell us about your journey to yoga.

Bethany: My very first yoga class was so special to me. I was 15 years old and it was led by my mom. As a perfectionist, awesome-at-stressing-myself-out High Schooler, I found her classes so relaxing that I usually fell asleep at the end. She would sometimes have to give me a little nudge when I started snoring!

After quitting my corporate advertising job and moving to Spain when I was 25, I began to explore my own yoga practice more deeply. (Ok, so maybe the impetus was that I was too cheap to buy a gym membership…hey, whatever gets you to yoga!) I received so many benefits from it physically, mentally, and emotionally that it sparked a passion to share it with others as a full-time career.

crheartseatedYoga has helped me to feel more grounded, present, and able to handle anything life brings me. Last year, I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 34, and my practice has been an incredible healing tool and companion. It has helped me to see this experience as a true gift. Cancer became my greatest yoga teacher; it’s teaches me self-love, acceptance, inner peace, and that we’re truly so much more than just this body.

Experiencing yoga as a path to self-discovery and creativity, I’ve been inspired to “marry” yoga with complimentary healing modalities: The Work of Byron Katie (yoga for the mind), Thai Yoga Bodywork (yoga + massage), and yogArt therapy (yoga + artistic play). I’m excited to offer a special Thai Yoga workshop at the upcoming Reset Hill Country Retreat where we’ll learn to give and RECEIVE gentle yoga stretches, massage, and reflexology. It’s a fun, playful bonding experience and will leave us all in a blissed-out state of relaxation.

RR: Why Reset Retreat?

Bethany: Ummmm….Why not? Our intentions are completely aligned and the timing of our partnership is just too divine. The Reset Retreat team reached out to me right after I completed a year of cancer treatment. I had taken a hiatus from leading retreats and was just beginning to open my mind up to starting them again. I realized that my heart really just wanted to focus on the creative part of retreats: building healing programs and leading yoga.

So when I received the invitation to co-create retreats with the ability to do exactly this, it was one of those adrenaline, goose-bumpey, “this is meant to be” moments. I’m a big YES to this experience and am so grateful and excited to witness what comes out of this partnership!

RR: What changes do your clients see in themselves after practicing with you?

Bethany: I have had the honor of working with so many incredible clients from all ages and backgrounds. Here’s what some of them have to say about their experience:

“Bethany has been my yoga instructor for almost a decade. She is very knowledgeable about all aspects of yoga…much more than teaching poses and alignment. Each practice is a calm, yet energizing experience. She is always in tune with what I need for that practice day. She offers supplemental reading, art and other experiences to help me as a person. I am blessed to have found her and to have her in my life. She has made me a better person.”
-Nancy

“Bethany is an exceptional yoga teacher. I had been practicing for more than a decade when I met her, and few classes have left me more grounded or present. She’s honest, real and disarming — whether its of physical tension with a hands-on adjustment {a serious talent of hers}, or of stressful beliefs when she facilitates the Work of Byron Katie.”
-Lauren

“I’ve taken teacher training for Thai Massage from her. I’ve gone to yoga retreats she has led. Bethany has the ability to reach out to each individual and go at the speed needed. I’m amazed at her professionalism, her approach to making a living as a yoga teacher is dedicated and total attention to detail. I look up to this woman as one who will go far. Her spiritual focus is taking new leaps as she studies under some of the new leaders in this arena. I will follow her anywhere!”
-Claudia

bethanywebbRR: We practice yoga outdoors during the retreat. Are there benefits to this that you’ve experienced?

Bethany: Outdoor yoga is the BEST! I managed a retreat property for 4 years and our practice space was an outdoor pavilion overlooking the lake. I loved it. During my last retreat in Costa Rica, we practiced on a deck in the jungle with the sounds of waves crashing in the background. Monkeys even joined our classes!

There is something so nurturing, grounding, and balancing about practicing in nature. The earth heals us on so many levels – it reminds us of our true, simple, and pure nature. It resets the nervous system and recharges our spirits. Every day, I make time to be in nature, whether it be for a morning walk, a gentle yoga practice, or just sitting in meditation.

RR: During the retreat, you’ll be offering both group and private yoga sessions. What are the differences?

Bethany: We’ll begin our days with a group morning yoga class. I teach a hybrid of different styles of yoga – Vinyasa, Therapeutic, Hatha, Restorative, Somatic Movement – with a focus on being present with the breath and mind. I also LOVE hands-on touch, so you may find yourself receiving a neck massage while in child’s pose or a foot rub in svasana.

Practicing in a group carries a fun tribal energy ~ we’re all in this together! It can also bring up stressful thoughts around comparison – “I should be as flexible as her,” “I’m not good enough,” or “My body should look like that.” This is all part of the practice. I love to invite students to become aware of the thoughts that come and go in yoga. Who would you be without the thought? In your body, present, connected.

You can think of the group classes as a fun “sampler” of different yoga techniques so that when it comes to private yoga: it is 100% about YOU. Your body, your desires, your preferences. Everything is catered to where you are in the moment physically, mentally, and emotionally. If you wish, we can create a customized home practice for you to continue on your own. Plus, there’s a lot more massage time J.

bethanywebbmorningmeditationRR: We believe in the importance of making yourself the priority so that you’re able to be a better mom, wife, daughter, friend, etc. How have you been able to do this?

Bethany: I couldn’t agree more. The most efficient way to put me first is to identify and question the thoughts that keep me from self-care, using The Work of Byron Katie (www.thework.com). Thoughts like, “It’s selfish to focus on me,” “my family needs me,” “I don’t have enough time.” Is it true? Can I absolutely know it’s true? How do I react when I believe these thoughts? Who would I be without these thoughts? And is it possible that the opposite of these thoughts are even truer? Meeting these thoughts with understanding has helped me to clearly see that putting me first is what’s best for me and for everyone else in my life.

Out of this clarity, it’s easy for me to make time for myself. And I’ve also let go of what that time looks like. It can be a 20-min yoga practice, a walk in nature, cooking dinner to my favorite music, singing karaoke, watching my fav Netflix, painting, sitting in inquiry, or doing breathing exercises while driving to my next appointment. When I say YES to me, I’m a kinder, more available, and joyful person. And I trust life will always show me the next direction. I get to just witness this amazing ride.
