GUEST POST BY WHITNEY ROSS
People ask me all the time…
“What am I doing wrong?”
“If you had one piece of advice, what would it be?”
Ta-da! Enter the inspiration for this blog post. Too often, we get caught up in the minute details of the whole health world. I get it. It is so easy to become overwhelmed by all of the information (and misinformation) out there. No diet, fitness plan, supplement regimen, or routine is universal.
To get you started on a journey towards your health, I have created a list of 5 core basic principles to grab ahold of and carry with you throughout your life.
5 tips for a healthier lifestyle
1. Weigh yourself regularly.
In the same clothes (or no clothes) at the same time on the same scale. Keep track. Strive to view the number on the scale for what it truly is, which according to physics is: the force that gravitation exerts upon a body, equal to the mass of the body times the local acceleration of gravity. Remove any emotional ties to the number. It is simply that: a number. A snapshot of your body in that moment of time. Look at the number as information, and do not let it rule your life. Remember, building muscle will cause you to gain weight in a healthy way! Aim for progress not perfection.
2. All foods fit.
Everything in moderation. The evil cycle of deprivation, overeating, and guilt is difficult to break. Your best option is to avoid it completely. Allow yourself to experience the satisfaction that comes from eating what you want when you want it (remember: moderation). The exception is a short-term diet or cleanse, such as the wonderful Vim + Vigor juice cleanses that reset your body.
Not everyday. Not for an hour a day. Listen to your body. If you need a rest day, take one. You will re-enter your fitness routine with more energy and enthusiasm. Incorporate both cardio and weight training. Balance is the key. Someone that can run a marathon but fails to do a push-up might lack the functional core strength that supports our posture and some many basic movements needed for daily activity.
Good old fashioned H2O. Alkaline waters, electrolyte enhanced water, and other fancy options are wonderful too. Find the water that truly hydrates you. Sometimes I drink what feels like a gallon of water from a certain source and am still parched. Again, listen to your body. Water is a pivotal component of our makeup as it regulates body temperature, lubricates joints, and helps transport nutrients. Dehydration is serious. Avoid it.
5. Set small goals.
Quantify your goals and write them down somewhere. Once attained, reward yourself. Lay your exercise clothes out the night before. Keep your gym shoes in the car. Pack your lunch for work two days a week. Remove electronics from the bedroom. Shift the pebbles around before you try to move the mountains.
The first step to living a healthier lifestyle is to make the decision to do so, and commit to it. Just take that first step!
